A Token

A Token

A Token

What can I offer but the calm after storms?

A tiny token to contend with your rainbow smile

Your dark hair exploding out from your head

Like a still shot of volcanic eruption

How can I compete?

I am the competence of long repetition

Marching forward in rain, snow, heat

Executing the game plan

Pizazz of youth worn away

Like a new car shine in a dust storm.

You choose words with a magician’s ears

As if your thoughts come aborning

Fully formed, massive

Irresistible

To the dulling soil of age

I want to drink your elixir

Find the fresh metal beneath a tarnished life

Till words flow across my lips

Like the first green thing

Reaching for the Sun in Spring.
