Safe Confines

Safe Confines

A Poem by David P. Eckert
"

about a choice not made

"

Safe Confines

Who might I have been

Had I fled the safe confines

Of trained professions

To tightrope

Across canyons of words

Finding enough good ones

To buy myself a meal

Or in my dreams

Whole pages drawn

To feed a family?

I know just a timid man

Brave enough to face

The everyday blizzard

Verbs, adjectives, nouns,

Bombarded by the minute

Holding onto gem stones

Shoveling the rest

Till the fire is stoked and hot

And the engine

Full speed ahead.
