My Dream That Didn't Come True

My Dream That Didn't Come True

A Poem by Donald Cole
"

This Is the past, just written today. Sometimes when we reflect

"

Once upon a time
there was a girl like you
I didn't know what to think
Could it really be you
I gave my love
you promised me more
than my dreams have ever held before
my world became
just you and me
It was long before it was us three
And of in to our drem was told
it was you
whom with I'd grow old
I'd look look into my happiness
and all that we did share
and realize that in this world
You really were not there
Life goes on and before long
My new world came to be
What once was three now turned to four
and soon I continued to see
That what I had I had alone
For you really were not there
We went on, I went on
and still I could not see
how you would show how you were there
for it never came to be
I held on to this dream of ours
for years I waited for you
Never did I realize though
You were my dream that never came true.

The three sounds like this couple made a baby in their love,
but the confusion is when the three turned to four-
perhaps one is left by another, who were three before now four as with child, alone...
Pessimism but I can see from the sonnet that the heart was trembling with passion
when written today...
I like the opening stanza, as if the narrator character, poet,
is intrigued by the being of the one this poem is written for,
the one this song is sang to...
It is beautiful, the rhyming is soft and sweet, the message still beautiful,
there is love, as from what is emulated when I read and reread it again.
