Not so long ago

Not so long ago

A Poem by Deborah Leah Krempa

just happened to be sitting there

on top an old pop crate

by the side of

the corner carryout

when he said hello

i was off in another world

in my manic mind

too much going on inside my head

so when i heard his voice

i nearly jumped out of my skin

then i yelled back at him

what do you want with me

strange but this is how we met

he went inside the store

and bought some cigarettes i guess

came out and apologized to me

we began conversing

just everyday chit chat

then i told him

my dad he died today

strange way to meet

a handsome stranger

though talking to him

didn't seem strange at all

like maybe we were meant to meet this way

I told him how my sister

has both my mom and daddy's ashes by her bed

how she can't seem to part with them

and what we eventually plan to do

maybe in the early spring

take them to a place

they call Cherokee Mountain

and let them go

he was so quiet for a moment

i could hear him swallow heavily

he said he took his parents ashes

to the Medicine Wheel in Wyoming

not so long ago

to let them go

Now I don't think we're strangers anymore
