The Song's Path

The Song's Path

A Poem by JUSTWRITING
"

The song triggers memories...

"
There's that song again,
An old, familiar tune
That haunts me to this day.

Ah! The memories it brings back-
The good, the bad, and the beautiful.

I feel lost
In an ocean of long forgotten times,
The dead and buried emotions associated with the song,
All the people surrounded across this one song.

It was a long time ago
When times were simpler,
At least for me,
And when friends came in abundance
As there was no politics involved
And everyone wanted to be a large group.

As the song plays on
I see the field we used to frolic in,
The flowers that surrounded us,
The abundance of trees, plants
And being surrounded by nature.

As the song finishes
Real life catches up to me
Like a fast approaching car
With no brakes.

I open my eyes
And find myself full of unshed tears,
Lonely and broken up inside.

What have I become?
Where did I lose myself through the years?
When did I become a shell of my former self?

I realize that this is what growing up is.
I shed my good and bad qualities
To try and become a "better" person,
Without apprecaiting what I'd had.
I threw it all away without a second glance
Until I listen to that old, hauntingly familiar song.

It's taken me years to see that
Life happened.

Author's Note

JUSTWRITING
I hope this does justice to my former self. My writer's block triggered a deep depression that I had to force myself out of. I'm still trying to recuperate (I didn't do anything stupid BTW).
