Heroes

Heroes

A Poem by Eddward Sadmann

Hunter S. Thompson
Jonathon Davis
Ernest Hemingway

Since I was young
I have had heroes
Like anyone else
Striving to reach a creative ideal in which I would be
In some measure
Similar

Charles Bukowski
Thomas Pynchon
James Joyce

Hoping against hope
That whatever made them the people they are
Also resided in me
It did
And it does

Jackson Pollock
Vincent Van Gogh
David Foster Wallace

An unfortunate fact about these creative types
Is their lives
I understood that these people
Who I aspired to be
Turned their pain into poetry
And focused on the pain

But pain is not poetic
And creativity is not waiting at the bottom of a bottle
Only glass and vomit
And if I’m lucky
Rehab
And if not
50 years of age

A lot of suicides and drunks on your list. Be careful.
