Depression's Jig

Depression's Jig

A Poem by Audrey Howitt

I dance the jig of depression’s watch

waiting

in the slowing two-step of waltz undone

to see if its face

has changed this time.

A grimace loosens

as torso bends toward

my ever present partner,

and those watching

seldom realize

that this represents

improvement

over the flatness of the watch,

and I wonder

how many more

dances

will fit

on my dance card

before the music stills.

Felt the tune played slightly out of time and have waltzed with another

Ah yes, depression, too many of us know it too well. Methinks it is some kind of infection, spread by those who can only see black clouds over their heads, and thunderstorms on their horizon.
Having said that, you frame how the black place can steal our hope and squeeze our breath...depression.
This is a morose and surrendering piece you have put out here, well suited considering the dark topic addressed.
Bravo.

Not morose, looks to me that you are writing your way out of it...Cheers!
Oh, you capture this so wonderfully, yet sad, but in slowmotion, and that two step of watlz is just an brilliant metaphor, great work again here Audrey. That dance card, too, you're a true poetess! thank you for this, nailed write.

Bowling for Dollars?
this is an amazing piece of how we dance with the darkness..you have painted it in a perfectly chilling way. Hoping someday your dance card is too full for this jig

Thank you Heather!
This gave me chills. In my mind I gave depression a face and I could imagine your words so clearly, they paint a beautiful picture. There's such a solemn note to this poem though, I can almost imagine a woman dancing with a completely straight face a forced dance, her brain overworking, wondering and thinking when will it end. It's just beautiful. I'm so glad to have found this.
