Another Hundred Words

Another Hundred Words

A Poem by Audrey Howitt
"

the prompt: write 100 words about having to write 100 words

"

Cruel Mistress,

You assignor of this most arduous task.

One hundred words--

Only, exactly

About the difficulty posed

By such a task.

What words shall I choose

To enliven and move hearts?

As you contemplate my one hundred,

Will you feel sorry for me

If I disclose to you

The number of times I counted words?

Twenty.

Does this number dissuade you

From undertaking

Such absurdist endeavor?

Or rather, lull you into

The false belief of ease?

And having decided one way

Or the other,

Do these words serve

To entertain for a moment

Or perhaps, move you to pity?

Were it not for the explantion at the start, you have created a mystery poem here: Who is the mistress? The Muse? It is not often the Muse demands so few words. Are they for an obituary where the newspaper curtails the pity? What do they, the words, say? Are they the truth? Or? Do they move hearts? If so, to what?
All in all, a bit of a feat to be able to write such an entertaining poem under such constraints. And you do make it look easy. And that's really hard.
