Three Friends

Three Friends

A Poem by Debbie Barry
"

A new nursery ballad, based on three plush animals that reside on my bed. It's intended to resemble traditional nursery rhymes.

Three Friends

In the deep wood there was a pond,

Splish! Splash! Splosh!

In the cool pond there liv’d a   Frog,

Splish! Splash! Splosh!

The Frog sat on a lily pad,

Splish! Splash! Splosh!

He flick’d his tongue, to eat a bug,

Splish! Splash! Splosh!

In the deep wood there stood a tree,

Creen! Crane! Crown!

In the tall tree there liv’d a Bear,

Creen! Crane! Crown!

The Bear lay on a swaying branch,

Creen! Crane! Crown!

His paw dipp’d in a honey comb,

Creen! Crane! Crown!

In the deep wood there was a glen,

Flick! Flack! Flock!

In the green glen there liv’d a Moose,

Flick! Flack! Flock!

The Moose stood in a boggy swamp,

Flick! Flack! Flock!

And munch’d upon the swishing grass,

Flick! Flack! Flock!

One day the Frog went out to hop,

Splish! Splash! Splosh!

He hopp’d beneath the trees and brush,

Splish! Splash! Splosh!

Beside a tree the Frog did pause,

Splish! Splash! Splosh!

And call’d above, “Pray, Bear, come down,”

Splish! Splash! Splosh!

The lazy Bear rous’d from his snack,

Creen! Crane! Crown!

He heard a friend call ‘neath his tree,

Creen! Crane! Crown!

Bear dropp’d down to the forest floor,

Creen! Crane! Crown!

To find out who had come to call,

Creen! Crane! Crown!

The Frog look’d up to see the Bear,

Splish! Splash! Splosh!

“Friend Bear,” said Frog, “I hop today,”

Splish! Splash! Splosh!

“I would your company enjoy,”

Splish! Splash! Splosh!

“If you would care to roam with me,”

Splish! Splash! Splosh!

The Bear look’d down and saw the Frog,

Creen! Crane! Crown!

He listen’d well, then bobb’d his head,

Creen! Crane! Crown!

“Friend Frog,” said Bear, “I’ll roam with you,”

Creen! Crane! Crown!

Upon my shoulder you may ride,”

Creen! Crane! Crown!

The Frog upon the Bear did sit,

Trip! Trap! Tromp!

The Bear did amble through the wood,

Trip! Trap! Tromp!

The friends together wander’d far,

Trip! Trap! Tromp!

Until they stumbl’d on the glen,

Trip! Trap! Tromp!

One day the Moose saw someone come,

Flick! Flack! Flock!

Into the meadow by his swamp,

Flick! Flack! Flock!

“Welcome, friend Bear,” the Moose did greet,

Flick! Flack! Flock!

“Friend Frog, as well, upon your back,

Flick! Flack! Flock!

“Friend Bear, friend Frog, how come you here?”

Trip! Trap! Tromp!

The Moose then ask’d. Reply’d the friends,

Trip! Trap! Tromp!

“We ramble ‘bout; do come with us,

Trip! Trap! Tromp!

“I will, and gladly,” Moose reply’d,

Trip! Trap! Tromp!

So Frog and Bear and Moose set off,

Trip! Trap! Tromp!

And walk’d together all the day,

Trip! Trap! Tromp!

No better friends could e’er be found,

Trip! Trap! Tromp!

Than were this Frog and Moose and Bear,

Trip! Trap! Tromp!

The day was done, and evening came,

Trip! Trap! Tromp!

“We should start home, I fear,” said Frog,

Trip! Trap! Tromp!

“To sup, to sleep,” agreed the Bear,

Trip! Trap! Tromp!

“But we’ll meet again,” Moose rejoin’d,

Trip! Trap! Tromp!

Back went the friends, each to his home,

Trip! Trap! Tromp!

In swampy glen the Moose did bide,

Trip! Trap! Tromp!

Up in his tree the Bear did climb,

Trip! Trap! Tromp!

And Frog into his pond did dive,

Trip! Trap! Tromp!

In the dark night there was the pond,

Splish! Splash! Splosh!

In the still pond there slept the Frog,

Splish! Splash! Splosh!

He dream’d upon the lily pad,

Splish! Splash! Splosh!

And rested well until the dawn,

Splish! Splash! Splosh!

In the dark night there stood the tree,

Creen! Crane! Crown!

In the treetop there slept the Bear,

Creen! Crane! Crown!

And dream’d upon the swaying bough,

Creen! Crane! Crown!

In the dark night there lay the glen,

Flick! Flack! Flock!

In the damp glen there slept the Moose,

Flick! Flack! Flock!

He stood knee-deep in swamp, and dream’d,

Flick! Flack! Flock!

And rested ‘neath the shining stars,

Flick! Flack! Flock!

Good night, friend Frog, friend Bear, friend Moose,

Hush! Hush! Hush!

Sleep well, sweet dreams, three finest friends,

Hush! Hush! Hush!

Another day will come anon,

Hush! Hush! Hush!

When friends together roam again,

Hush! Hush! Hush!

Initial reactions and constructive criticism welcome. I know the storytelling lines don't rhyme. This is meant to resemble a nursery ballad, in the style of the old Scottish ballads. The three animals are stuffed toys in my bed.

Hi Debbie this was fun to read! I understand the ballad and would like to congratulate you on keeping it on track. It is well written and certainly unique with the "Flick, Flack, Flock's," and the "Creen, Crane, Crown's."
