Inside Your Head

Inside Your Head

A Poem by dmfriend25
"

A teenage girl thinks she has everything. Perfect boyfriend, perfect school, perfect parents. But what happens when the ground crumbles under all that? Can she put the pieces back together?

"

5 "

The girl primps her hair.

Radiant, like a painting.

Staring is eminent.

She likes when they stare.

She enjoys the constant attention.

It makes her feel secure.

Insecurity is her biggest fear.

It’s like something is inside her head

Nipping at the back of her brain.

She has the money.

Her looks could turn any head.

Her grades make her teachers proud.

How long will this last?

Who can I trust?

Why won’t they talk to me?

She ignores the thing in her head

That nips at the back of her brain.

It’s all she can do.

Her boyfriend stops replying to texts.

Her mom starts seeing someone else.

Her grades start to suffer.

Life begins to change.

Ignoring becomes hard.

Smiling becomes impossible.

People start turning their backs.

The thing in her head begins to drain her

With poison laced fangs.

She can’t take much more of this.

She wanders around her house, aimlessly.

She stumbles across some relief.

Setting the wooden instrument across her lap

She takes a deep breath

And strums the strings.

The harder she strums

The duller the pain gets.

The thing in her head loses power.

On a trip to a concert

She meets someone.

Someone who makes the thing in her head disappear completely.

She laughs at her jokes.

She listens to her play.

She knows she exists.

They talk about music.

They calm each other’s nerves.

They care about each other.

This is all she needs,

Relief from the things in her head.

A moment of peace.

I'd love any suggestions for this piece. Was the voice consistant? Did the voice seem authentic enough? Was anything vague about the story?

Please enjoy.
