![]() Teeth Lost and Hearts WonA Poem by Brendan StackThe class room was full and the kids were still rowdy I had eyes for one girl but love was no certainty The teacher talked about Greeks, of the Athenians and Hippocrates Of wars won and lost and the famous battle of Thermopylae She looked over to me and passed a pink note "It's over with him, It's you that I want" My heart started to race and hands began to tremble What if her boyfriend found out what might my face then resemble But it's was a risk worth taking for a moment with her Those hazel nut eyes and long platnium hair If it came down to violence I was duly prepared Three years of Karate meant I wouldn't be scared But Charlie, her Boyfriend was a bruiser in size He stood six foot tall and I was about to take away his prize No matter the odds whether they be slim or not I figured I would go out swinging and put in my lot The school bell rang and she took my hand "Charlie knows now and is ever so mad" I don't remember much other than walking past the school band So I will tell you an account that was given to me first hand I was told Charlie walked up to me and swung with his right He swung so hard he turned off my lights But when I woke up my head was not broke There was a crowd standing around me and a lump in my throat She had kissed my bruised lips and was icing my shoulder In that moment a feather could have bowled me over Thirty years to the day when I look in the mirror I know that in life you can lose but still be a winner © 2013 Brendan Stack |
