![]() Wild and Free in a PeatlandA Poem by Michelle Buckley![]() Inspired by a walk with my son, and grandson, on Cadishead Moss, which is just a few minutes walk from our house, it's an absolutely fantastic place to study nature, and be at one with it...![]()
In the warmth of the setting sun,
Flowering Gorse, and unflowered Heather sway on a South Westerly breeze; Green trees, and the once exploited Peatlands on the level horizon, Here, and there, a glittering glint of water. A visiting Roe Deer, saunters along, casting a hazy shadow in the near distance, The weird, and wonderful Stone Curlew makes an appearance, looking somewhat dinosaur-like; With their strong yellow black beak, large yellow eyes, and long yellow legs, Giving a sudden burst of it's loud, wailing song. Sphagnum moss, and Cottongrass recolonising the reserve of this true Peatland, The smell of carbon stored in the peaty soil fills our nostrils; Replenishes our lungs. Darter Dragonflies dance over the moss, A short Eared Owl, and Buzzard, hover in a hunt, for small movement; While a Lapwing, and Skylark, breed down on the ground. Common Lizards rest lazily on the old rail tracks, Rare Bog Bush Crickets call amongst the Heather.
