Pain

Pain

A Poem by Michelle Buckley
"

When the pains of life, soak the bones

"
Pain soaked bones,
Bone soaked pain;
Now it's gone, or has it.
Shifted to somewhere else,
Did we deserve it;
Their shame, passed on, for us to carry.
Do we really matter;
Other than being gaslighted,
Scapegoated into oblivion.
On the edge of seventeen.

I often wonder how these generational cycles of abuse continue. Doesn’t anyone just say to themselves, this is not how I want to live, and just try something new? I suppose Jung was right when he said: “The healthy man does not torture others—generally, it is the tortured who turn into torturers.”

When I was eighteen I came in from work at the sawmill holding my back and my daddy asked me what was the matter with me. I told him my back hurt. He just laughed and told me I wasn't old enough to have a back. But then, he was killing people on enemy occupied islands when he was eighteen so I wasn't about to argue the point with him. Pain can be a friend. It lets us know when something isn't right but it's something no reasonable person cares to endure for very long.
