Dad

Dad

A Poem by Dogster
"

A poem I wrote in 2005 for my Dad, who passed away in 2001.

"

My dearest Dad, I talk to you every single day,

High up there in the Heavens, and oh so far away!

I know that you hear me; I feel your strength within,

And in my heart have finally found where these words have been.

Dad I see you in myself, throughout the journey of my life,

Those moments when I smile, and many that get me into strife!

I know I share your faults, but thank God I share your strengths,

I wear my heart on my sleeve, and for those I love go to any length.

How you and Mum met is a tale I’ve told a hundred times,

Such great romance I can only pray will one glorious day be mine.

To create my own beautiful family would be a dream come true,

And with your guidance I’ll be a father as nurturing as you.

Mum told me how you felt in those moments before you left,

And it is your great legacy that I now seek to protect.

Dad I know you’ve been so proud of all I have achieved,

And it gladdens my heart to know that all I do, you see.

I’ll always wish I had the courage to say “I love you”,

While you were here in this life, could I not speak the truth?

I will never forget how I hurt you, or how quick you forgave,

I’ll forever thank you and Mum for the man I am today.

As I continue to play whatever cards fate elects to deal,

It’s your memory and your love that inspire what I feel.

When it comes to my heroes, you are truly the only one,

For you are my father, and I am proud to be your son.
