Different Degrees of Darkness

Different Degrees of Darkness

A Poem by Isabel Draper

Different Degrees of Darkness

Different degrees of darkness

Different degrees of light

But the light's too blinding, and it's too cold for bullet broken white

Different degrees of darkness

Different degrees of light

And the dark's too tempting, to become parallel to the night

Different degrees of darkness

Different degrees of light

But the light's too frightening, that thin layer of consciousness just below the kite

Different degrees of darkness

Different degrees of light

And the darkness eats away at my life, as it holds me in arms of starving unrest

Different degrees of darkness

Different degrees of light

But the light was never on my side, in all of its self centered righteousness

Different degrees of darkness

Different degrees of light

And the darkness is my friend my lover, and I pray for the day I'm consumed by its nothingness
