The Song of My Family

The Song of My Family

A Poem by Jenna

Creaking of old bed springs easing their burden

And the frantic barking of anticipation from a silly dog

Scared by the hissing of the evil-eyed cat, disturbed

As Mother releases the morning sun gathered at the curtain.

Puttered whirring of the electric toothbrush spinning

Before water splashes away residue of dreams around the eyes

And the persistent knocking on the door from impatient Brother

Is met by the aerosol hairspray Sister applies just to annoy.

Thumping of leather work shoes echo as Father paces

As he looks for the shine of his keys or the worn texture of his wallet

Able to make his exit only five minutes too late as the door slams

And the burnt smell of toast awakens the fire alarms.

Mother on a dizzy search for lost necessities

As a vehicle wrapped in gold hums its way through the dense fog

And Brother and Sister embark on another song’s journey

And the evil-eyed cat returns to the dream world of mice.
