Look! The Sun Empire Falls!

Look! The Sun Empire Falls!

A Poem by Aaron Burnette

Sitting, writing my wrist off,

Scribbling down synonym phrases, homonymned with rhyme.

It's Boredom City here in this shadowed place.

Out of nowhere, a silver twinkle steals my focus and I glance outside.

From inside my dark, lonely home,

Through a frosted, crystal glass,

It seems as though snow is what drifts from an Auborgine sky.

Somehow, I know it is not.

I step one step outside my sinking doorstep...

It's July!

Whose ever heard of snow in summer time,

When one is expected to sip sweetened, sugar lemonade

And not creamy, hot cocoa?

What resembles a flake falls into my open, outstretched palm, cutting deep.

After fishing it out and washing away stained blood,

I realize it is a piece of glass, like none I've ever seen.

Glass falling from the sky like snow?

The thought stuns me.

I run in circles,

Yell, proclaiming with a pale-stricken moan, not knowing why,

"Heaven has broken!  It has fallen!"

I sit back down; study the tiny fragment, poking with a finger

Wondering where God went and what happens next...?
