'Tis The Month After Christmas

'Tis The Month After Christmas

A Poem by Janyce Helen Van Es

‘Tis the month after Christmas
We’re both unemployed
Got laid off the jobs
Neither one of us enjoyed

The food bill we made
Although we aren’t eating
I freaked when I weighed
Chairs too small for seating

No money for water
I visit my neighbors
To beg or to barter
For so many favors

We huddle all day
Just to keep warm
Eating the dog food
Should do us no harm

Soon as it warms up
We’ll be on our way
Looking for work
So we can collect pay
