Passenger on a Speeding Train

by Eddie Davis

Time goes by,

It rushes past,

People and things,

You love, won’t last,

What can you do,

What else to say,

You cannot help,

But feel this way,

The modern air,

Reeks terribly,

You huddle in,

Your memory,

Of better times,

Or so it seems,

The longed for past,

Found in your dreams,

A passenger on,

A speeding train,

Midnight express,

In the cold rain,

The ticket once,

Was bought for me,

A one way trip,

To eternity,

With no refunds,

And no delays,

You’ll leave on time,

Come what may,

And far ahead,

A station nears,

The accumulation,

Of many years,

The train arrives,

It’s never late,

To drop you off,

Your final fate,

And when you reach,

The final stop,

The story ends,

The credits drop,

The journey long,

The path unclear,

But the Lord’s,

My engineer.

Liked the spare style and the crisp rhyming. Things seem pretty bleak, but there is a statement of faith at the end. Time is ever in motion; look within until you find a place where time does not exist.
