Society

Society

A Poem by Allison

Society

Society molds us to be something we’re not.

The image of perfection is drilled into our minds from a young age now

Girls; skinny, beautiful, long hair, thigh gap

Boys; Muscular, handsome, tough, perfect

It is etched into our brains that if we aren’t perfect we’re wrong

If we are fat, we have to be ashamed and covered up

If we don’t have a flawless face, cover it up with makeup

If we have a flawless face, cover it up with makeup

As a society we are obsessed with the thought of being perfect

If someone’s not a certain weight

If they don’t look a certain way

If they don’t act a certain way

They’re social rejects

They’re wrong

But let me just tell you

I’d pick being a social reject any day

If it meant that

Society wouldn’t try to conform me

Into something I’ll never be.
