What You Wanted to SeeA Poem by Elizabeth KilbrideI have eyes that know without pretension. They
know more than what my ears tell my brain and
they know more than what my mouth conveys, but
you can tell they know; you’re sure of it.
And
if my eyes know (as you’re sure they do) it
is because my chest swells with the warmth of
an empathetic heart which informs my
gaze of how long to linger on yours.
You
get caught by my ingenuous knowing, and
by the recognition of your truths in
my eyes, because you never presumed they
could be found outside of yourself - but
now
you start to fear my eyes know only how
to reflect what you wanted to see.
