Vieta

Vieta

A Poem by Ella Simone

Beyond the eastern edge of the clouds
It lies still and nameless
To its residents it is simply everywhere
The land of here and there
And then and now
Time is a mere suggestion
A slowly dribbling molasses
Location is entirely distant

The air is rouged with honeysuckle
The earth, a mattress of moss
Sometimes the mountains are coated in vanilla icing
And the streets are dusted with sugar
Sometimes heat shivers across the horizon
Shedding shards of light

In the mornings
Often suspended in happy little hangovers
The people drink coffee
Kissed by hazelnut foam
They spread glistening indigo over toast
And sink into blueberry oblivion

They clean their molars in rivers
There are no orthodontic smiles
Their earl grey teeth are jumbled and beautiful
They bathe in giant teacups
Because what else is there to do with giant teacups?

With the birth of each child comes the birth of a pup
Both hungry for touch and wriggling with excitement
Apricot breath
Soft and soft and soft

With the death of each day the children find themselves
In blizzards of worry
Afraid this topaz afternoon will be their last
It isn't long before they realize
That the only thing in their rubbery grasp
Is here
Still and nameless
