How to be a Person

How to be a Person

A Poem by emily

I try to tune out the chatter

Do they notice I’m blushing?

The soup sitting in my stomach,

Threatening to come out

I pull on the skin around my nails

Can they see it bleeding?

I clear my throat

I try to rub the sweat onto my sleeves

Can they see the dark splotches on my red shirt?

I try to breath

To unleash the coils in my chest

That are so tight I might choke

I try to-

Remember what they are saying.

Don’t stare too long

Look up

Not so much

Look down

You’re taking too long

Say something

You’re too Quiet

Don't stutter

Drink water

They won’t notice

you are Silent

if you keep swallowing water

Stop being so Awkward

Do something with your hands

Smile

A real smile not a fake one

Why won’t they sit down

We should both sit down

I hate standing

Like this

Stop wringing your hands

You look Nervous

No one gets you

Don’t think so much

They think you hate them

They hate you

They know

Breathe.

Wait, what were they saying?
