A HUNDRED POEMS - LX

A HUNDRED POEMS - LX

A Poem by E.P. Robles
"

The poem explores themes of longing, desire, self-perception, and the speaker's feelings of unworthiness. It juxtaposes the speaker's admiration and yearning for the subject's love.

"
what longing within
          your eyes
a tender sweet belief
          I see
a gaze across what is
and what could always be
         and lips apart
         expectation-kiss
a slow hand moves
       across a breast
a touch of your heart
that which you always give
       that brilliant love
which is, but how can it be
in this shadow-world today
dear angel soul-woman
what desires you have
     focus upon this man
I am just
     a human animal
and not worthy     of more
a man that just grazes
in the fields of madness
learned for sure but so
and surely not enough
to even hold
your tender hand

What amazes me about your poetry is the variety on offer. You can switch from abstract, free verse, rhyme and just about everything else and then come up with an offering for your readers such as this. A poem of longing and desire written in the first person, from someone who feels unworthy of love. What a tragedy that internal conflict bestows such meanness on an individual.

I sense a sea of longing in this poem and a hesitation that comes from high admiration for the person desired. The poet adores his beloved and sets her on a pedestal so he even views himself unworthy of her. He is blessed with much insight and is learned and yet he feels he falls short of his lady love's perfection. Sometimes though, such adoration coupled with a dip in self-esteem can turn into a dangerous obsession and the kind that may lead to insecurity and consequent crimes of passion. I loved the intensity of your expressions and the fervor in your words. The love felt was absolute.
