Sleep! Work Though I Must

Sleep! Work Though I Must

A Poem by Eric Cox
"

A touch of humor about a rough situation.

"
I ache with need
my bones bleed
a corpse am I
sleep lurks close by

work though I must
how damn unjust
I feel a crawling need
yearning to be freed

sleep! my flesh cries
9 to 5 denies
I envision home
two long hours left I moan

I can't withhold the spell of sleep
through my veins I feel it seep
I jolt awake to an enraged shout
"Get back to work! Shake the cobwebs out!"

a No-Doze pill is the gift from my boss
to turn me productive, no work at a loss
I toil through my tasks yearning for sleep
I feel the situation claw deep

the whistle at long last blows, out the door I crawl
within my parked car I let the land of nod befall
I awaken to the rising moon, soon I'm finally homeward bound
we can try to deny the spell of sleep, but its shroud will inevitably surround

I know the feeling of this poem. We can feel like robots and wish to be in better places many times in the workplace. I like the flow of thoughts and the realistic ending. Thank you for the excellent poetry.

Truth abounds in this great write about work and how it holds us as slaves nowadays. Very good...:)

I can identify with this one. Three to eleven pm, then back again six am to three pm. Finally home to rest, hit the bed & sound asleep, the phone rings. No clue if it was day or night. I think I said something I shouldn't have said. LOL Good work!

This is really good. You describe a true reality for at least half the working world. Very well done and the humor in this just makes it all the more a better poem!
