Passenger

Passenger

A Poem by jacob erin-cilberto

Passenger

the luggage of incompatibility

carry on,

carry off

waiting at the turn style

as the bags under your eyes

go round in circles

and you find your heart has been misplaced

your emotions,

on the wrong plane

lost in the parallel eccentricity

she wants to love you

with no more than a purse of questions

a compact

and no return ticket from where she came

but even in a window seat

as you view the landscape of love

getting smaller

the risks shooting toward the clouds

rainbows put away in black boxes

the crash of reality expected

dreams told to fasten seat belts

but somehow a surprise landing

she holds you as you taxi to paradise

finding out you can still fly

first class

and not pay for that second suitcase

filled with non-taxable fear.

Brilliant parallels and comparisons here. Relationships are indeed a journey. Great work again.

dear Jacob... the allegory of hidden meaning is
very clever. A flight of bumble bees making honey...
what a Journey. truly, Pat

When I read your lines about this incompatible relationship Jacob, I was thinking about what a roller-coaster of a ride and imagining those emotions rising and falling on the journey. Never knowing what's coming next. The passenger expecting a bumpy ride and surprisingly finds on occasion he gets a first class journey on a second class ticket. That's where you took me. How you churn out these consistently good poems is a source of delight. Your muse is constant.

The allegory is so well placed as we have all felt that feeling of exhaustion mixed with feeling unreal as we are herded along as passengers. But in a relationship as passengers we are vulnerable to the whims of the 'airline' as it changes it's terms and pushes it's budget boundaries. Such a sublime line: 'rainbows put away in black boxes'!
