Kissing Liberty

Kissing Liberty

A Poem by Erin Lee

Kissing Liberty

For a decade, at least
love’s virgin kiss
loitered soft
on my lips

For a decade, or more
youth’s innocence
lingered sweet
on my cheeks

For a decade, and three
unspoken words
prattled kind
in my sleep

And now…
I kiss not to steal
something beneath
where tenderness meets
a smirk, complete

I know how to ache
and nurse on the scars
where coldness grips lust
and hurts weigh deep

I mumble less apology
tempting fate - speak!
destiny courts wake
in my dreams, asleep
I kiss free
