Here Now

Here Now

A Poem by Alice

To know that now is special,

But not to see it, Feel it-

A terrible reaction,

The kind sun’s, dreadful burn.

And to know that you are living your dream,

Experiencing the world, with open eyes,

Open mind, open heart.

Then to feel so separate-

From all of which you are a part,

Like a caged bird lifted to the sky

-An awful awareness.

To You: You are not alone.

You stand like me,

By the side of the road,

In the middle of everywhere,

Watching the grass and the highway,

Wind off to nowhere in particular-

Say that here is most important.

Know, that despite feeling nothing but the strong breeze,

Having lived here is a mark no man can erase,

A mark central to all of being

- existing.

I lived here.

Maybe that is all I know,

All I have learned,

All I have kept.

But - the understanding of this is most essential,

For the traveler whose experience,

Takes them places where pearls of knowledge

are so abundant there is no time to string them.

No time to turn them into anything

more attractive than what they are-

Unprocessed, untreated, unrefined, individual truths-

Beauties,

That cause no emotion-

No stirs to the heart.

Maybe in time something will be made,

By stringing one truth to another,

Pulling together images, thoughts, and memories.

Turning this feeling of being adrift, this fact of nothingness,

Into something brilliant.

But see that things as they are now,

Are more important then they will ever be again.

Truths to you, flat fact, raw void,

Are things that one can never express to another.

Someday the stringing of pearls may become a deed you do for others,

So they can perceive, identify, categorize,

A part of you that they do not recognize in themselves-

(The sun’s beautiful burn, the bird suspended in the sky)

- I caution against it.

For you are most important.

And now is more important than then.

Even- especially- when the now- here- feels like nothing but breeze.
