I Do

I Do

A Poem by Faith Kinnison

I Do

The day I said, "I do" was a special day for me

I looked into the eyes of the man I loved, especially

When he looked back into mine, I thought

I could see the love in his, even when we fought

Though we had made love before, that night was different

It was as if, we had entered a new dimension

When he touched me I smiled at the thought

That no other man would ever touch me the same way

I meant every word I said that day, from the bottom of my heart

Sometimes things don’t go the way you plan

I certainly never expected to look at this man

As a stranger, a man I barely know

I want the man I love, but where did he go?

I used to wonder what people meant when

They said they just didn’t love each other anymore

I didn’t think that was possible, but now

I know differently

It’s not that they fell out of love, but

The person changed so much, they are unrecognizable

One day, you wake up and look at this person next to you

And you wonder who they are

They are not the person you fell in love with

What are you supposed to do?

Stay, and be miserable?

Cheat, and break their heart?

Or, say goodbye, and do the best you can?

I wish the third option had been chosen by my man

The day I said, "I do" was the happiest day of my life

But today, I am no longer a wife
