The Pale-Skinned Girl

The Pale-Skinned Girl

A Poem by Zoya

Silence prevailed the school library,
It had never been so cold before,
The clock ticked in the background,
The room wasn't crowded anymore.

He looked up from his book to catch
The eyes of a beautiful young girl,
Who reminded him of the magical galaxies,
And the shells that yielded pearls.

She quickly looked away but
He stared at her for a bit,
There sure was something in her,
That made his heartbeat skip.

He'd come back every single day,
And not once were his hopes crushed,
For he always spotted her sitting,
Her skin pale yet cheeks flushed.

And soon the library turned into
His favourite place of all times,
He loved the smell of the unread pages,
That piled the shelves in lines.

One day he gathered some courage,
And walked in with a rose,
Only to find his Love missing,
From the chair she always chose.

He looked around here and there,
For the girl with skin pale,
When finally he saw her leaving,
The school premises with no trail.

He ran as fast as he could,
And followed her all the way,
To a house at the end of the street,
That seemed rather dull and grey.

He quickly rang the bell when,
An old man answered the door,
“I’m...I'm looking for the pale skinned girl”
In his softest of voices he implored.

The old man rather puzzled, replied:
“I'm afraid no girl lives here, but know
I once had a beautiful daughter who
In a school nearby, died ten years ago”

A very compelling ballad! Really grips at the heart and renders is heavy! I felt this....this made me feel! For the premise of the poem is very relatable to many around the world, and the unexpected ending is simply perfect. Way to change it up. You have a few lines that are musically wonky (Stanza 7 Line 2; and Stanza 10), but everything else is brilliant! Well done! Stanza 6 is my absolute favourite.

you`re welcome
I love the end, how it does a 360 turn and instead of a happy ending, you make it more interesting and unexpected. I thought she would be like sick or something, but instead, she died ten years before he saw her. I enjoyed reading it!

Whoa. Creepy, I liked the emotion you have left the readers in.
'Silence in the Library' can be a good title, also it is a name of one of the episode from Doctor Who 😀
