Knot

Boredom + completion of a book = this. Random cover art (picture not mine).

The scarf is laced around tightly,
holding on to him,
keeping him from the bitter cold.

Light flakes begin to descend,
frozen marshmallows of winter.
They fall faster, turning into harsh glass,
but the it keeps him safe.

The wind howls,
a roaring lion in a land of snow,
but it stays on tight.

The scarf protects him, holds him close,
shields him from the harshness of the world.
It doesn't loosen its grip. It remains
where it belongs, close to him.

He becomes distracted, overwhelmed
by the toughness of winter.
The scarf becomes loose,
and unknowingly,
 he lets it drift away from him.

 

It dangles for one last moment,
brushing close to his heart.
Silently, it drops into the cold, icy snow, forgotten.
He doesn't realize that it's gone.
