Ode to Valentine's Day

Ode to Valentine's Day

A Poem by Monica Garcia

My face is covered in chocolate

I stick my index finger into the next available piece:

orange cream;

sticky, tangy, and sweet.

Sweet is the day of a thousand mourning women,

of the death of a love that only existed in story books.

Fingers sticky, bitter tongue,

dark chocolate holding me back

from speaking my mind.

F**k a Hallmark card.

He never loved her anyways.

The soft, cuddly arms of a giant teddy bear

wrap me snug inside.

Smearing remnants of a coconut cream

Atop his belly stuffed with lies.

A day,

the day,

Of a box of chocolates so sweet.

A flower. A kiss.

And a cherry inside rich syrup.

Yes indeed, it can be a fickle and insincere business!

Penned with feeling and emotive flair !
