Meaning

Meaning

A Poem by Gene Denham

For centuries, nay millennia - one word has dominated human minds. It has been de-bated by poets, theologians, philosophers, and laymen alike.

Why?
Why are we here? Why do we exist?

What is the meaning of life?

Contrary to the mice, it isn’t forty-two.

Is it love? Is it to server a higher purpose?
Is it meaningless?
No " there is meaning. But the answer may surprise you.
Pain.
Joy is meaningless without sorrow. What good is laughter without tears? Love is more powerful if one has known heartache.
Despair gives birth to hope.
There is meaning in pain, for it is pain that defines life. It is what separates us from the dead.
Perhaps the greatest pain of all is mourning. We mourn for those we love, those we cherish, those that have left footprints on our memory.
The saddest fate of all is to leave without anyone to mourn us. If no one mourns our death, did we ever truly live?

We are here to cause others pain, when we like Hamlet, shuffle off this mortal coil.
