In America

In America

A Poem by ghaw2007

In America

Verse 1

Dissenters shall be punished

If they disagree with the president

There is a price to pay

If you don't toe the line

The cost could be minor or very expensive

But that doesn't matter much

Because you are paying for something

That should be free

Verse 2

Some liberals think the country

Thinks the way they do

From time to time

They experience a rude awakening

Conservatives are not better

Not by a long shot

They divide voters with wedge issues

Like abortion, guns and God

Bridge 1

Hypocrites say they believe in the Constitution

Then they turn around and deceive the public

Many are afraid to stand up against them

In fear of being unpatriotic

Bridge 2

Real matters are swept under the rug

The truth is always distorted

A president can be impeached

For lying about sex, not about a war

Bridge 3

God forbid if you ever encounter the right-wing machine

They make examples out of their opponents

Chorus 1

In America

You can't do whatever you want to do

You will be arrested

You can't say what you want to say

Political correctness gets in the way

We are all to blame

Chorus 2

In America

You can't do whatever you want to do

You will be arrested

You can't say what you want to say

Political correctness gets in the way

We are all to blame

Remember what democracy means

Government of, for and by the people
