Tonight I Wish I Wrote the Saddest Lines

A Poem by Irene Enriquez

Tonight I wish I wrote the saddest lines

Write, for example, "The night is shattered and the blue stars shiver in the distance."

The memories the night sky brings.

Tonight I wish I wrote the saddest lines
I wonder if I ever loved him, and if he loved me too.

Through hours like this one, I wish he held me in his arms.
I imagined his raging kiss under the stormy sky.

He loved me, but not the way I wanted to be loved.
But I loved him, sometimes. Maybe, always.

Tonight I wish I wrote the saddest lines
To think that all the things I thought were real. Were not.

To feel the the empty bed, emptier without him.
And my tears fall like a feather on the pillow

What does it matter if it wasn’t real?
The dawn is empty nonetheless and he isn’t here.

That was all. In the dead of the dawn, no one’s singing. No one’s singing.
My soul can never lose him because he wasn't mine.

But still I look for him as if he was ever there
I breathe the air as if his smell still lingers.

I see the same color of dawn from my window.
We, at that time, may have existed.

I’ve never loved him, that’s certain, but maybe I loved him.
I touched my own skin and imagined his hands.

Another’s. He has always been another’s. Like this poem.
His voice. His dark thoughts. His infinite eyes.

I’ve never loved him, that’s certain, but maybe I loved him.
A day is forever when you have to forget.

Because through hours like this one, I wish he held me in his arms.
My soul seem incomplete knowing I never had him.

But still these memories feel real, they’re the ones I remember.
And these are the verses I wish he wrote for me.

I know. I know. It's a sin to even think about deconstructing the great Pablo Neruda's poem. But I thought if I could somehow make it my own, it will always be a part of me. :)

De-constructing is part of life but I would suggest to write your own poem with your own words and imagination. For a poem shines the brightest when made 100% by yourself but I still like the way you write and I feel that you have talent. Never stop writing.

Good job :D
