The Lie

The Lie

A Poem by grayhaven

The Lie

My love for you was deep and strong

We bathed together in our passion

And lay in the afterglow of our love

Entwined together, molded as one

You were the one that completed me

And made me whole for the first time

The secret looks meant only for me

Looks full of love, longing, want and need

Until the day my world came crashing down

Or lives together are not meant to be

Lies were formed to protect all

And we play the game of indifference

I find that I can no longer live this lie

The lie that says, I do not care

Yet I must convince my heart

That I no longer love you

To do so, I but trade one lie for another

I continue on feeling dead on the inside

Like I have not drawn a life giving breath

Since that fateful day so long ago

But still I keep the coals of our love

Buried deep in my heart

Where to this day they are smoldering

With a heat that time cannot quench

When love embers start to fade and life come in and deals a spade rather than a heart, it leaves us without that spark that once fed our soul. Pride steps in and tries to cover up our pain...but it's lacking in it's endeavors. Great poem, filled with the pain from your soul

The pain and anguish of a broken heart. Superbly written!

I didn't get out of this poem what Ink Stained did. You, clearly, didn't mention a lie or anything else that broke up the relationship, after re-reading twice. That is why I try not to read other people's reviews, until I have done mine. I get a relationship that has, simply, grown apart for one of the parties involved and the other party standing there dumbfounded at the news. That's where the lies come in, lying to yourself and trying to hide your true feelings from them that your world has just been shattered by. I don't think true love ever goes away, even when one person in the relationship is the only one in love! If this is true, I know it hurts. However, I can't tell you that it ever goes away. I liked the write and took extra time to savor it!

Your poem seems to sum up the arc of love between a couple that has grown apart due to either a single lie (an affair, theft, misunderstanding?) and yet, there remains, if not passion, at least one strong memory, hope really, that might spring back to the earlier passion. I enjoyed the sentiments. I am seeing myself in your words.
