A Poem by Megan Lynn Tocci
"

Don’t kill what makes you human, kid. It’s all we really have.

"

I promise, self

that sometimes (most times)

you won’t be able to think away feeling.

You, with your books and your words and your answers.

You, with your spirit and your ambition and your stamina

will not be able to rationalize emotion.

Sometimes anger flows like liquid fire in your veins

and night pushes on all sides of your body

and you must inhale despair like powdered glass.

On the nights your bones are heavy, let them be heavy.

On the nights they are hollow, let them be hollow.

Do not measure yourself by the density of your skeleton.

You are allowed to be human tonight.

Plant your feet in the dirt,

face the east until morning

and feel the earth spin and careen through a dark universe.

Put hand to heart and know that you are real

and that alone is the most beautiful thing that’s ever been

and ever will be

and you have been designed to know this.

Don’t kill what makes you human, kid.

It’s all we really have.
