A Poem by Megan Lynn Tocci

some people say

you should write quick

to know what you feel about something,

but i don’t see why, when there are so many

words we jump to out of habit or

necessity that don’t really represent

how it is in an

unfiltered moment.

we say we’re angry,

but what we’re experiencing

is powerlessness against injustice.

the world should be one way, but we

live in an unbalanced other.

we say we’re sad, but really

it’s hope unfulfilled.

happiness, security actualized.

but it’s easier to use those band-aids

and quicker too.

so we use sadness

when we really mean that

she was supposed to be here and couldn't.

say we’re mad when

they were supposed to love

 me but didn't.

and happy for

deep woods campfires,

and sandy toes in 6:00am oceans, and

sleepy dusk crickets keeping time to

Benny Goodman crackling

out of an antique radio.

how can one word mean so many different things?

why do we ask it to?
