Severed

The beginning...

"I don't want to be married to you anymore."

"Are you sure?"

"Yes, I'm sure."

"Why?"

"I don't love you anymore."

"But I love you!"

"That's unfortunate."

"Why don't you love me anymore?"

"I just don't.  It's not you, it's me."

"Well what can we do about it, then?"

"I want a divorce."

"I don't."

"I do."

"What about the children?"

"What about them?"

"They've been raised as sister and brother for the last seven years!  You're the only Dad my son has ever known. And you know how close your little girl and and I are!"

"That doesn't have to change."

"Do you promise?"

"Yes, I promise."

"Okay."

"Oh, and I need you and your son to move out asap."

"You're the one who wants a divorce!"

"It's my father's apartment.  I'll let you stay until after Christmas but I want you out before this month is over."

"We're gonna ruin Christmas for the kids with this news!"

"We'll tell them after Christmas."

"We'll tell them after Christmas that my son and I are being kicked out by New Year's?!"

"We have no choice- this is not working anymore and I want a divorce."

"You're hurting me and the children on a whim?"

"It's not a whim, it's what I want."

"Okay, whatever.  But remember, you promised we would let this affect the children as little as possible."

"I remember.  Things won't change with the children.  Oh, and I need you to take the dogs with you when you leave."

"You want me to move to what I can afford myself- a one bedroom apartment on the poor side of town- with my teenage son and two dogs so you and your daughter, who you have every other weekend, can live in this three bedroom apartment?"

"It's my father's apartment."

"No kidding.  We just moved in three months ago.  How am I supposed to afford to do this?"

"I'll give you $100 a month for a year to help you."

"It's not gonna be enough to be affordable to me, but whatever, as long as you're happy and as long as the kids still get to see eachother and you don't bail on my son and I still get to see your little girl."

"I need you out.  I don't want to be married anymore."

'Yeah, I know.  Just remember your promise.  I'll sign anything you want, just don't let it touch the kids."

"I promise."

Later...

"Did you get the papers in the mail?"

"The divorce papers?  Yes."

"Will you sign them?"

"I can still see your daughter?  You won't bail on my son?"

"Yes, you can, and no, I won't.  Will you sign them and send them back asap?"

"Okay."

Even later...

"Did you get the papers I sent back?"

"Yes.  They've just been finalized, you should be getting your copy in the mail shortly.  Now please don't contact me or my daughter anymore."

"What????????????????????????????????????????????????????????......................."
