The Improbability of Forgetting

The Improbability of Forgetting

A Poem by Rachael Hayes

You can keep folding the memories in half but there will always be a segment that remains
Like a single tainted synapse
An infection that lives inside you
But only exposes its self once a year
No matter how many times you try to burn it
The ashes always float along side
The new moments
 It happens slowly
In small detached segments
You want to tell your new lover a story
But its a memory with an old flame
So you replace the details
Don't say you picked them up every time they fell
Trying to teach them how to skate again
Say it was a friend
Don't say their name
Say it was fun
Maybe they should come with you next time
Then suddenly
Every story, memory or random fact
Is shrouded in their name
Happened with them
They told you
They helped you learn
Like the memories could no longer stay folded down
They have become your comfort when you question
Am I able
Build a fort from the pillows
And get lost inside
Try to forget the numbers of times
They said 'like' when they were mad
Or 'so' when they told a story
Forget the number of sighs before sleep
Forget the rhythm of their heart beat
Try to get lost so deep in thought
That these trivial details no longer matter
So you keep folding your memories down
Maybe one day they will be small enough
To fit into the coffin you built for them on September 1st
Burry them in inconsistencies
Along side your broken dreams
