About: This Girl

About: This Girl

A Poem by Hayley

No, I understand
This is an injustice
You don’t comprehend.
Look at me and
You will see
Ten billion stars
Reflecting the light
Of a candle
On a windowsill.

My friends, they laugh
They try to say
My name, which means nothing but
Defines the girl that
Occupies this fragile shell-
Heart and bones, neurons
And white blood cells, it’s all I am.
It’s all I will never be.  But they
Look at me like I am a messiah,
A loon, happy, simple.  They don’t see
That I am trying not to pack a bag
And leave this place, this prison
Of gossip, incest, and rape of my soul.

I don’t care about them,
Because they don’t care to see
The real, Hayley
An entity I have yet to meet.

Wow, that was really good. It was a little more free form than I typically like, but since you wrote it so well it didn't bother me at all. The whole thing aims to make your point with laser like precision, and the end takes an interesting turn with the last line. This is a very good piece and I'm very pleased to have read it.
