The Dragon and the Butterfly

The Dragon and the Butterfly

A Poem by H.L. Cerveise

The Dragon and the Butterfly

In the dark garden, he travels across the twisted paths.

Sometimes glimmers of light flicker and shine,

These little pixies would flitter just out of his reach.

Sometimes he smiles at them,

Other times he turns away from them.

Distant sweet voices would whisper to him,

Saying you are not alone, tell us your story.

He would write bits and fragments of his tale.

He reveals his layers but only at a distance.

Some would see his red and blue dragons,

In understanding they would shake their heads.

Hearts would open but never could or would touch.

One day while traveling down a different dark path,

He spots yet another glimmering light.

At first, he thought it was just another far-off pixie.

Upon further inspection, he realizes something,

She was closer than any other, and she seems different.

I am a butterfly she whispers into his hungering ear.

Let me come closer he breathed as the fire within rekindled.

No she said you are already too close.

I would not breathe my fire on you and hurt you.

It is not that which I fear she said as she smiles at him.

Will you at least talk with me for a while he asked?

Why sure, I do not fear dragons, and I see you are much more.

It was not long before they both realize they were close.

Yes, for sure in space but also in spirit and heart.

They were both alone even though surrounded by many.

Twisted, warped and dark I be the dragon warned her.

Oh, I know but you are more than that she said through a grin.

You are a butterfly and I am dragon we both can fly,

Our wings can unfurl, and we can ride the waves of our imagination.

Together we can soar to heights we could never do alone.

I agree but you are more than a dragon, and I fear.

Is it, me that keeps you away?

Oh, no, we have met to early she said as she flutters her wings.

Then what is wrong, I know it is something in me, he frowned.

I only see myself as a butterfly, I am just still a chrysalis.

So, you know I am more than a dragon, and you accept me.

He presses on; Life is short; we should delay no longer.

I will breathe my fire in my hands and warm them.

I will cradle you tenderly in my right hand.

My left will caress you softly, and you will feel my desire.

I will keep you warm until you break free of your chrysalis.

To his surprise and joy, she relents and agrees.

It was a hot August day his excitement was high.

The dragon that is much more than that arrives.

He sees his butterfly that is much more than that.

He unfurls his wings draws her close, and they kiss.

It is just not a peck but one born of a deep longing.

This kiss is not the end for it leads to much more.

It is a beginning of a dragon's and a butterfly's journey.

Now they have a beautiful new garden together.

It is adorned with sunflowers and fragrant red roses.

When the butterfly gets cold, the dragon's fire warms.

In the dark the butterfly glows lighting the dragon's way.

They both tend and relish each other and their garden.

This is an extraordinary and outstanding story-poem. This highlights the importance of cooperation- as the dragon and the butterfly do in the end. Some truths of life like- "life is short"- have been talked of in between. The poem is simple and can be understood by all- this is a very good point of all your poems. So very well-written and so deep.
I have one error to point out- "You are already to close" - it should have been too not to- you must have omitted the 'o' by mistake. Please rectify.
Great work anyways. Keep writing.
