South Poughkeepsie.

South Poughkeepsie.

A Poem by Boyd Johnson

self imposed perdition

sentenced &

carried out

through self involved volition.

carefully placed blame

repeated and believed.

leave the past in flames.

its better watching something burn.

self imposed imprisonment

a sham a ruse a lie.

to fill the nighttime thoughts

with unconvincing "better than's".

carefully stacked mounds of pity

"this is for her. she deserves this."

no one asked. on my own,

ive built this city.

lies for mortar.

paved the streets with abandoned dreams and lost hopes.

i'm moving.

Having spent a little time in the mid-Hudson Valley, this certainly rings true, although it works for any number of Rust Belt locales-- or, indeed, for many people. The idea of unfulfilled dreams, unrealized potential, and continual disappointment is all over this piece. Very nice piece of work.
