Makwa

Makwa

A Poem by MCS
"

Nature always wears the colours of the spirit.

"

Beaver tail paddle laps quietly

Caressing waters dark as soot

Each stroke sooths the soul

Loon cries its mournful song

Followed by silence that embraces

Paddling towards the setting sun

Water, sky and I are now in rhythm

Troubled thoughts peel away

I am at home here in this place

The quiet is all-consuming

Canoe travels in silence

My chest expands my soul is home

I feel the weight of time here

I sense those who’ve traveled

These waters and now watch over me

In Ojibwe, "makwa" means bear, specifically a black bear. It's also a significant animal in Anishinaabe culture and mythology, holding a prominent place within their clan system.

A good Native title and poem shedding the light of these bears to nature where their habitat is threatened by human action.
I like to try a canoe paddling towards the setting sun.
A mighty fitting poem.
