Mara-The bookkeeper

Mara-The bookkeeper

A Poem by isiah_holmes

Wondering in and out of this vast temple
Cruising in circles around its foundations
A band of boys and girls search for a clumsy protector
A kind, rebellious  spirit
A keeper of knowledge, vast valley's of secrets
they're searching for this old girl-This young woman
They seek out Mara-The bookkeeper

She is tall and slender, a face ripe with deception
Her face, plane then frantic then finally happy or sad
Her voice inconspicuous, "How could this be the bookkeeper?"
Where is Mara the Bookkeeper?

One boy saw her walk, run, flee away
Like a fairy hidden beneath this worlds sheet of glamour
He chased her down, pursuing her knowledge of him
He knows she knows of his transgressions
His sins, his secrets, his friends and their minds
She is an eternal, a set in place entity of knowledge
She is Mara the bookkeeper
Where is Mara the bookkeeper?

I know of this elusive guardian
This young spirit free of careful play
She relinquishes nothing, nothing for her say
Her say in what is recorded
Her say in what is remembered
Her say in what has happened this day
She, however, acknowledges no favors
She owes few reparations to aimless travelers
She only possesses knowledge, forbidden and tainted
She is the unknowing scribe of this realm
So as you travel into the core of this place
Deeper and deeper
Keep an eye open, beware and be mindful
Of Mara-The Bookkeeper

I wonder if Mara is death, god, or something inside ourselves, a symbol of memory. All hold nothing but knowledge, owe few reperations, and certainly don't trade in favors. Are we all the temples to find a clumsy guardian inside? Is she trapped to be released, or is she something that we wish to hide away? So many questions, do you have an answer? Does Mara?

You have a great sense of description. You did a wonderful job explaining who Mara is, while at the same time leaving her a bit of a mystery that makes the reader wonder. Great job :)
