No Turning Back

No Turning Back

A Poem by Smiley Fry

There would be no point

To go back in time.

If you hadn’t made the mistake

You wouldn’t know it’s a mistake

And you’d just make it again…

My mind wouldn’t change

Because your words wouldn’t change.

You wouldn’t know it’s a mistake

Until what you said is said

Then it’d be too late to take it back.

There would be no use

To turn back the clock.

Time would only move forward

In the same direction it always has

So in the end nothing would change.

Let’s rewind. Let’s rewind.

Life is a broken tape

Always stuck on “play”.

You can’t fast forward and see the future

Nor can you pause to think things through

Nor rewind to fix your mistakes.

Tick. Tock. Tick. Tock.

A powerful play goes on

And we’ve each got our lines.

We are not given time to look it over

We just try our best to recite our lines correctly

And if we mess up, we can only hope time will make the audience forget.

Tick. Tock. Tick. Tock.
