True wealth

True wealth

A Poem by jackmendez

Expensive Nikes on my feet
Designer wear on my body
Reeking of designer fragrances
Jewels hanging on my neck
As I make my way
Into my million dollar mansion
Walking in waddling lockstep
My confidence at its zenith
This , I tell myself , is the final downfall of poverty
For I tell myself , that poverty is the lack of wealth
I look at me in my bedroom mirror
I look different
My skin different
My hair different
Suddenly , the door opens
And I jerk my head upwards
My eyes now off the mirror
Morning mum , I say to her
Morning son , she replies
She looks at me
And I look at her
Then she tells me
Poverty , she says
Is not a lack of wealth
But a lack of a positive attitude
A positive attitude , she says , is the true wealth
