I Saw You in the Stars

I Saw You in the Stars

A Poem by The Hampstead Poet

Cold, dark, too soft to touch
Yet too hard and too cold
You slipped away from me last night
I can see you in the stars

They twinkle, oh so far away
My heart knows you're not there
The endless pull, the warmth in my smile
Gone, the world an empty void

Too late, what could I have done
I watched you slowly die for months
My grief beyond tears, beyond another smile
You took that part of me when you left

Gone, the light, gone, the laughter
All you left was a gaping void
From which springs strife and suffering
I can't believe that you're not here

Yet last night, you appeared to me
Happier than I'd ever seen you
Beautiful, immortal
Yet bound by chains to this life

And though my suffering is beyond description
I yearn to set you free
I must accept that you are gone
And to move on? Tho' not forget

Last night I saw you in the stars
Celestial, immortal, free
And for once, in a long while
I allowed myself to smile

The Hampstead Poet
This is my first post, comments would be appreciated. I tried to write in an older style, does it work?

I have deeply enjoyed your poem.Every word rife with emotion. We want to keep those we love with us forever but we have no say when our time is up.Would it be fair to them to force them to stay because we cannot bear to be without them?
