The Youth of Laurel Oaks

The Youth of Laurel Oaks

A Poem by Kenneth Stephen Goodpaster

The Youth of Laurel Oaks

The youth of Laurel Oaks will sometimes laugh

When they forget the homes that are broken

Or see the faces of the morning staff

Beaming in heartache when they have awoken.

The youth of Laurel Oaks will sometimes play

When they mind before and after lunchtime

Or when they take their medicine each day

With nurses carefully checking each time.

The youth of Laurel Oaks will sometimes dream

When they think of a new future elsewhere

Or speak with other youth about their life's scheme

With chances of  being something somewhere.

The youth of Laurel Oaks will sometimes weep

When they consider their life and choices

Or think of no hope except death and sleep

With deepening fear of secret noises.

The youth of Laurel Oaks will always stay

Within the minds and hearts of each other

When from Laurel Oaks they make their own way

With great intention for life another.

The youth of Laurel Oaks will never die

When one youth writes song of their endless plight.

When ten feet under having said goodbye,

He will forever keep alive their flight.
