when i was 3 red sonja i wanted to be i had a runt hound pup, ginger colored like me and mounted on my alder stick horse i was a warrior princess in our stump lot yard...
then
down the mountain where the loggers worked a steep dusty track
the magnificent teams, horses so big their heads were as long as the whole of me
“hey red, you n the pup want a ride, this here’s molly n that’s jake” lifted us up first ride of my life on molly’s glossy black back north side of the ranch yard to south
smooth n easy, i fell in love right there, right then, many horses i’ve owned and ridden since
but i’ve never loved one more than i loved molly the gentle friesian giant
so glistening black i defied dragons and flew to the stars on her back
never falling, always slipping down with my ginger hound
jeannemarie, Believe it or not I've never ridden a horse; my wife grew up in a rural area and I had to show her the picture you posted with the poem. She LOVES the great big work horses SHE remembers in her youth. The verse you wrote, the descriptive beauty, now makes my feel like I've had the pleasure myself. Beautiful write. take care...dan

I was an indian warrior princess on my paint. He ws s always ready to let me ride bareback..halter or no. I remember tsking bailing twine to make a makeshift halter. Only fell once when I let a friend take the reins. He knew the difference immediately.
Thanks for bringing back the memories with this write.
gorgeous poem, Jeannemarie... childhood memories captured so wonderfully that i was brought back to my own childhood where we tried to ride the wild horses as they grazed in the open fields around us... I remember my mom talking about one of the horsed her father owned and i could sense that she had a soft spot for it... I understand this hold an animal can have on us... this was a fantastic ride through your memories... blessed youa re :)
